Latest - New Navigation System added 27 March 2004. What do you think? Are there any broken links? Comments welcomed - click here
Slow running - Feb/early March - apologies from our provider who made strenuous efforts in a very difficult period. Now seems to be over!
Apologies
If you see this logo on our site - it's a temporary measure to show parts of the website which need to be brought up to date.
We are sorry about this - we do our best to keep it updated.
These notes are intended to help in a very - and ever more - complicated world. You take this advice at your own risk and if you are unsure try to find someone who knows - most local computer suppliers are very helpful and knowledgeable and will guide you to the right protection for your machine which they usually sell at a very similar price to the multiples.
Safer SurfingBefore you next use the web, do make sure you have taken proper precautions.
All the above are fairly well known products which we understand to work well, though - as we are most certainly not in the computer software business - you'll have to take the responsibility for making sure that the products work together on your own system. It has been known for instance for one brand of virus scanner to clash with another producer's firewall. They are also likely to ask you to change to an upgraded version for which you'd have to pay - and if you do so will the products still work together on your own system?
Combined firewall and virus-checkers: If you wish to ensure compatibility between the two, you can obtain comprehensive products from many providers and there is a wide range of sophistication. These are not free and, if you don't wish to chance buying the software on a CD from an office supplier or computer store (in which case you probably can't return it), you can download many on a 30-day trial.
| IMPORTANT - SPOOFED HYPERLINKS Beware of viruses! Messages bearing virus and including spoofed hyperlinks to this website have been received - although they may look similar to this: www.princesrisborough-cc.co.uk/inbox/prccinfo/read.php?sessionid-10401 ... they actually contain a link to some other site. PRCC does NOT send emails with such links - DO NOT click on them (and get a good virus checker and firewall while you're at it!)
A spoofed URL might have one or more of the following: %00 %01 @ Remember: if in doubt - DON'T click on it!!! [Some of this info courtesy Lavasoft®] |

Once again: these notes are intended to help in a very - and ever more - complicated world. Have you ever been sent a .zip file and couldn't open it?
The .zip format is the nearest thing the PC has to a standard compressed file format so that files can be sent more quickly. Sooner or later most people need a zipping utility.
Most of us know about WinZip which is available as a free trial download, but this is 'shareware' which means you should pay if you continue to use it. There is a free alternative.
ZipCentral has all the features you could ask for. You can create self-extracting and disk-spanning archives, unzip individual files, it supports drag-and-drop from Explorer and you can even view the contents of a zipped file without extraction. The best bit is that it is completely free with no nags or adverts.
ZipCentral 4.01 can be downloaded free from the ZipCentral website.
This is another product which we understand to work well, though - as explained above - you will have to take the responsibility for making sure that it works on your own system. We have no connection with this or any of the other products mentioned above.
PDF is another common format for internet use. It provides an efficient way of publishing large documents so that they can be viewed in the original layout. To read them you need software - the Adobe Reader® which can be downloaded free & which has now become a virtual standard.
